Finding the Right Trainer
Securing a suitable trainer is crucial. While we suggest CKG Canine, it's vital to recognize the diversity in trainers and their methods. It's important that you feel confident in your ability to follow through for optimal results. We advocate for trainers who are prepared to utilize all available tools to tailor the training to each dog's unique personality, requirements, and your desired outcomes. Each dog has distinct needs.

Nutrition Resources for Dogs and Cats
Proper nutrition is essential for the health, behavior, and overall well-being of every dog and cat. At Main Street Mutt and Meow Rescue, we believe that good food fuels happy, healthy pets — and we want adopters and fosters to have access to reliable, science-based information.
Below are helpful guidelines and trusted resources to support you in choosing the right diet for your animal.
Dog Nutrition
A balanced canine diet should include high-quality protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Dogs thrive on consistency and well-formulated meals that meet AAFCO nutritional standards.
Key Tips
-
Choose foods labeled “Complete and Balanced” for your dog’s life stage (puppy, adult, senior).
-
Introduce new foods slowly over 7–10 days to avoid stomach upset.
-
Avoid table scraps, cooked bones, and foods toxic to dogs (grapes, onions, chocolate, etc.).
-
If your dog has allergies, GI issues, or medical needs, ask your vet about special diets.

Cat Nutrition
Cats have unique dietary needs — they are obligate carnivores, meaning they require nutrients found primarily in animal proteins.
Key Tips
-
Feed diets labeled “Complete and Balanced” for your cat’s life stage.
-
Cats need moisture, so wet food is highly encouraged (especially for urinary health).
-
Avoid vegan or vegetarian diets — cats cannot thrive on them.
-
Free-feeding dry food can contribute to obesity; measured meals are usually best.

Special Diet Needs
Some animals may require customized diets due to:
-
Food allergies
-
Skin conditions
-
Pancreatitis
-
Kidney disease
-
Weight management
-
Stomach sensitivities
When fostering or adopting from us, we will inform you if a pet needs a special diet. We can also help supply or recommend appropriate foods when needed.
